To me, this feels like maybe the kid went into a coma after hitting his head, hell he was already hurt? Perhaps his parents were divorced and he was too young to understand this at the time. I do believe maybe the mother (or father perhaps?) was abusive. I think the two were coping with trauma caused by the parents or maybe a partner invited into the house. The film very much shows the two don't feel safe in the house, which is where kids should feel safe. Maybe this was all a coma fever-type dream of Kevin going through his memories but within the way, a child would see it. (Though maybe the numbers were how long he's been in a coma, I do feel like it would explain why his sister's face was blurred in a way. He forgot what she looked like as well as his parents.)
